Light o' the Moon Dulcimers came to be in 1985, when Molly was introduced to building them by her late uncle, Jim Murphey. He taught Molly to build a dulcimer from a kit. It was so much fun that she bought another kit and built her first dulcimer. Molly enjoyed it tremendously, so she bought another kit to study the parts, which put her on the road to becoming a luthier.
The name "Light o' the Moon Dulcimers" came to Molly in 1986, while going to school full time at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, working part time at the Arkansas Geological Commission and raising her two children as a single mom. The only time available to work on custom dulcimers was late into the night, hence the name Light o' the Moon.
Molly's work has been featured in several newspaper articles and local magazines, including The Laurel of Asheville, NC, Smoky Mountain News of Waynesville, NC and several other feature articles in local arts and entertainment magazines. She has also been featured in the arts and entertainment segment of the local news in Asheville, WLOS, to do a story about a dulcimer Molly made for the 80s pop musician, Cyndi Lauper, in 2017. Unfortunately, Cyndi's dulcimer was stolen en route to her. Molly continues to create original instruments for many clients.
In 1992, Molly relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, NC. She recently brought Light o' the Moon Dulcimers to the upstate! We are now located in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. In 2022, Doug MacCallum joined forces with Molly when they were married in May 2022. Doug has a background in woodworking and is a great asset to Light o' the Moon Dulcimers!
Look for an upcoming article in TOWN Magazine, which is a free local arts and entertainment publication distributed around the Greenville area! They will be doing a feature article on Molly and Light o' the Moon Dulcimers.
